SPEED GOLF REPORT

Posted on: 11 April

The much-anticipated Speed Golf event was held on Friday 22 March and got under way in spectacular fashion. A total of 41 participants took up their positions around the golf course, and just after 6.00pm our very own European Tour player, Daniel Gale, hit the first shot. In the words of Paul Gow, Daniel “went full lunatic” and bombed a huge drive over the creek, nearly landing on the head of the waiting Steve McCahery. From there on the pace was hectic as players raced to their next position after hitting their shot amid much laughter and shouting. Eighteen holes later our official timekeeper, Ross Patten, stopped the clock at 24 minutes 34 seconds as the final putt dropped.

There are too many stories to list here, but some highlights included:

  • Before the first shot, Brad Fasher practicing some pitch shots from the back of 15 green to a red flag and holing out, then 2 minutes later Owen Brightman taking up the challenge and holing out himself – amazing!!
  • Wazza Grant preparing to putt as the ball rolled to a stop on the 4th green after Daniel’s tee shot, only to then start chasing the ball as it zipped back towards the front of the green
  • Owen, Nick, Keean, Gibbo, Dan and Keith completing the 5th hole in just over 30 seconds
  • Mark Foley, in position on the 9th fairway but running over to hit the second shot on the 8th hole after Steve Kemp rattled the trees with his tee shot (sorry Kempy)
  • Brad Fasher, acting as link man between 13th green and 14th tee, tumbling backwards into the sand bin while attempting to catch a very poor throw from Cocko!

The clubhouse balcony was a lively place afterwards – “when are we going to do that again”, “I can’t recall a time when I have been so excited on our great golf course – today’s event was like super glue for fellow members”, “I reckon we can do better next time”, “today felt like the ‘old school’ atmosphere I remember as a kid. So good”, “great fun – old mates, new mates, golf course buzzing on a Friday night – how life should be”. These were just some of the comments from a happy group of members.

Stayed tuned for the next event – you won’t want to miss out!
