Eric Apperly Team Match Report – CHCC v North Ryde

Posted on: 19 August

The team travelled to Richmond Golf Club for their final section game and a high-stakes showdown against North Ryde, knowing the equation was simple, must win, and do so by a greater margin than Concord win over St Michael’s.

With Concord just half a point behind us on the ladder, it was all going to come down to todays matches with the victor progressing through to the finals.

Match 6 – Keean Holmes – Win 6&4

Keean came out firing and never looked back, producing a clinical display of power and precision. A pinpoint approach to a foot at the 3rd and a stunning 2-iron into the 5th set up early birdies, and his relentless driving left his opponent scrambling. Three birdies in total and rock-solid tee-to-green golf sealed a dominant 6&4 win. The perfect start!

Match 5 – Blake Komorowski – Win 4&2

Blake was all class from the opening tee shot. Fairways, greens, and pure composure saw him storm to a 4-up lead inside six holes. His calm, mature mindset never wavered as he closed out a commanding 4&2 victory. Professional, unflappable, and decisive – Blake delivered when it mattered.

Match 4 – Matthew Fullerton – Win 5&3

Matt set the tone early with disciplined golf that never let his opponent settle. He tightened the screws on 14 and 15 with precise irons and birdie looks, forcing a concession for a 5&3 result. It was a composed and clinical performance, leaving no doubt on the outcome.

Match 1 – Nick Heanes – Win 5&3

Nick produced a brilliant burst of golf, stringing together three birdies in a row on 6, 7, and 8 – highlighted by a superb 7-iron to two feet on the par-3 8th. Although a couple of bogeys briefly opened the door, Nick’s composure shone through as he powered home to a 5&3 victory. Pure class from start to finish.

Match 2 – Andrew Kneeves – Loss 3&2

Andrew’s match was a battle of patience and precision. Turning 1-up at the 9th, he looked set to press the advantage, but his opponent matched him shot for shot and finished strongly. A birdie at the 16th sealed Andrew’s narrow 3&2 defeat in what was a high-quality duel.

North Ryde had struck back and that left us ahead 4–1 with one match still on course – and everything riding on it. Concord had already completed a 4.5–1.5 win over St Michael’s.

A final match win or square would keep our season alive – and deliver our first finals appearance in over 14 years.

Match 3 – Owen Brightman

Owen’s match was a rollercoaster – ahead early, back to square at the turn, then 1-down heading up the 18th with everything on the line. Under immense pressure, Owen delivered two superb shots to set up birdie while his opponent faltered going OB off the tee with a poor club choice. With steely composure, he won the hole to square his match, securing the vital half point. A clutch finish and the result we needed!

Final ResultCHCC 4.5 defeated North Ryde 1.5

By the slimmest of margins, the team edged out Concord and secured a finals berth. It was a day defined by composure and teamwork from a tight knit group of players that have been working together and building to over the past 4 seasons representing CHCC in the Eric Apperly competition.

A huge thanks to our caddies – Brad Fasher, Justin Hatchett, Martin Brightman, Jeff Fullerton, Steve Gannon, and Mannie Vassallo – for their tireless support, and to Peter Alexander, Michael and Amy Kneeves, and Sharon Heanes for coming out to cheer the team on.

Week one of the finals has us up against Pymble at Lynwood GC. First group to tee off at 1130am. We’d love to see you all there, supporting the team as we step into finals for the first time in over a decade.
